Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your Aprilaire registers and grilles are caked with dust, showing rust streaks, or restricting airflow in your Los Angeles home, we clean and restore them as part of our air duct cleaning service. Most Aprilaire register and grille cleaning jobs in Los Angeles run between $40 and $120 per register when done as part of a full system cleaning, with the per-register cost dropping when the whole home is done at once. Homeowners usually find us after years of visible buildup they can’t get off with a rag and a vacuum, or after noticing certain rooms never seem to get the airflow they used to.

We’re an independent Los Angeles duct cleaning company, not affiliated with Aprilaire. But we work on their registers, grilles, and diffusers every week across the city.

Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To

Aprilaire’s register and grille line spans three basic families: the stamped steel sidewall and ceiling registers found in most Aprilaire whole-home air systems, the aluminum return-air grilles paired with their media cabinets, and the newer magnetic-seal diffusers spec’d on higher-end Aprilaire installs. The compatibility gotcha most Los Angeles homeowners hit is this: Aprilaire sidewall registers use a slightly deeper mounting flange than generic box-store registers, so a universal replacement often leaves a visible gap or doesn’t seat flush against the drywall.

To identify what you have, pull the register off and look at the inside edge. OEM Aprilaire registers will have a stamped model code, usually starting with an “A” or “RA” prefix, followed by numbers that indicate the opening dimensions. Measure the opening, not the faceplate. A 4×10 opening is the most common in Los Angeles homes built after 1980. When we stock replacements on the truck, we carry both OEM Aprilaire registers and quality aftermarket equivalents that match the exact flange depth and fin spacing. For a visible register in a living room, we’ll recommend OEM or a match that’s cosmetically identical. For a return grille hidden behind a door or in a hallway ceiling, a well-made aftermarket unit saves money without any performance loss.

Signs Your Aprilaire Registers and Grilles Need Attention

  • Visible dust or debris around the register face. When you see that gray film around the louvers that won’t wipe off, it’s not just surface dust. It’s the visible edge of a much thicker buildup inside the boot and the first few feet of ductwork behind the wall.
  • Rust or corrosion streaks. In Los Angeles, coastal humidity near the Westside and South Bay accelerates oxidation on steel registers, especially in bathrooms and laundry rooms. Rusted registers can’t be cleaned and restored; they need replacement.
  • Stiff or non-adjustable louvers. The pivot pins on Aprilaire louvers wear out after years of adjustment. Once they stiffen or snap, the register can’t be balanced, which means that room either bakes in summer or freezes whenever the AC cycles.
  • A room that’s always warmer or colder than the rest of the house. If the louver won’t open properly, or the register is so clogged it’s effectively closed, that room becomes an airflow dead zone. The ductwork may be clean and the blower may be fine, but the room won’t respond.
  • Whistling or rattling from the register. A loose mounting flange or a bent louver will whistle when your system runs. It’ll drive you slowly insane, and tightening the faceplate screws rarely fixes the root problem.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a straight register or grille swap, most Los Angeles homes run between $40 and $120 per register including the part and labor. The range comes down to three things: the register size, the finish (painted steel runs less; brushed aluminum or custom finishes run more), and whether it’s OEM Aprilaire or a matching aftermarket piece. We give you a written price before we touch anything, and that price doesn’t change at the door.

If the register can be cleaned rather than replaced, that’s significantly less, which is one reason we always look before we quote a part. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to register and grille work the same as it applies to full duct cleaning: if the work falls short within the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge. Dale Whitmore put that in writing on every job from the start, and we’ve never stopped doing it.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely remove a register and clean the visible surface yourself. Turn off the system first, pull the register, and wash it with warm water and mild dish soap. Dry it fully before you reinstall. That handles cosmetic dirt. What it won’t handle is the buildup inside the register boot and the first few feet of duct behind the wall, which is where the real airflow restriction lives.

That’s where negative-air extraction comes in. We run a Nikro negative-pressure unit at the return end of the system, which pulls loosened debris out of the ductwork and into a HEPA-filtered containment unit instead of blowing it into your living room. Then we run a Rotobrush rotary brush line through the duct to dislodge what’s stuck to the walls. For a clogged register, that’s the difference between a clean faceplate and a clean airway. If you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, call us at (213) 733-0665 and describe what you’re seeing. Tell us the symptoms; we’ll tell you honestly what it’ll take to fix it and what it’ll cost.
