Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Guardsman Duct Sealing & Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Most Guardsman duct sealing and repair work in Los Angeles runs between $290 and $640 installed, depending on how much of the duct run has failed and whether we’re repairing a section or replacing it outright. We stock Guardsman-compatible sealing materials on our trucks, so in most cases we can complete the job in a single visit, usually within a two-hour window. Homeowners typically discover the problem the same way: a room that suddenly won’t hold temperature, a hissing sound behind a wall, or dust accumulating around a register even though the system was cleaned recently.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman duct sealing systems appear in residential and light-commercial setups across three product generations. The original Guardsman line used a foil-backed tape system applied over sheet-metal seams and joints. The second generation moved to mastic-based sealing applied at the factory, which holds up better to heat cycling but still fails at flex-duct connections. The current Guardsman series uses a hybrid approach: mastic at the plenum and a reinforced polymer tape at branch connections. The compatibility gotcha we see constantly in Los Angeles homes is this: early-generation Guardsman tape does not bond to the newer polymer tape, so if someone did a partial repair ten years ago with the old material, you can’t simply layer something over it. The old tape has to come off first, or the seal fails again within months. The label on your existing duct tells us what we’re dealing with. Look for the Guardsman product code stamped on the outer jacket, usually three letters followed by four digits. If the label is gone, we measure the duct diameter and inspect the seam type. For Guardsman specifically, OEM sealing kits are the right call when the duct itself is in good shape and you just need the joints redone. If the duct jacket is brittle or the inner liner has separated, an aftermarket sealer from a company like Hardcast or Design Polymerics often works better because it’s formulated for older, oxidized surfaces that OEM tapes won’t grip.

Signs Your Guardsman Duct Sealing & Repair Is Failing

  • One room runs warm in summer and cold in winter. A failed seal lets conditioned air leak into the attic or crawlspace before it reaches the register, so that room at the end of the run gets whatever pressure is left, which usually isn’t much.
  • You hear a faint hissing or whistling near the furnace when it runs. Escaping air makes noise at the point of the leak. If you hear it behind a wall or up in the attic near where the duct passes through, the seal has likely split there.
  • Dust collects around a register within days of cleaning. A gap in the duct pulls attic air, insulation fibers, and dust into the airstream. The leak acts like a vacuum on the return side, pulling in whatever is floating around outside the duct.
  • Your energy bill crept up without a change in usage. A duct system leaking 15 to 20 percent of its air means the furnace or AC runs longer to hit the same temperature. Dale Whitmore has measured systems in Westside homes where nearly a third of the conditioned air never reached a single vent.
  • Visible gaps or peeling at the joints you can see in the attic or garage. Many Los Angeles attics hit 140 degrees in August. That heat cycling is exactly what causes Guardsman tape to lift and mastic to crack. If you can see separation, the repair is already overdue.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Los Angeles homes, a targeted Guardsman duct sealing repair lands between $290 and $640. The lower end covers one or two accessible joints re-sealed with the correct material for your duct generation. The upper end includes multiple joint repairs, a section of damaged flex duct replaced, and a leak assessment with a digital manometer so you can see the before-and-after static pressure numbers. What drives the range is access: a duct run in an open attic with standing room is a straightforward job. A run through a crawlspace with eighteen inches of clearance takes more labor. Every quote is a written flat price for the whole repair, parts and labor included, agreed before we touch anything. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the seal fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnostic part yourself. Go up into the attic on a cool morning, run the system, and feel along the accessible duct joints with the back of your hand. If you feel air moving where it shouldn’t, you’ve found the leak. That’s information worth having, and it helps us give you an accurate quote over the phone. The repair itself is where DIY goes sideways, and it’s not a safety issue on duct sealing the way it is with a gas line or electrical panel. The problem is material compatibility. Using the wrong tape, or using the right tape over a surface that wasn’t cleaned properly, gives you a repair that looks fine for eight months and then lets go. By then you’ve spent the money twice and you still have a leak. If you want to talk through what you’re seeing before you commit to anything, call Dale Whitmore’s team at (213) 733-0665. Tell him what you’re seeing in the house, and he’ll tell you honestly whether we can fix it and what it’ll cost.
